The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area councils to commence an indefinite strike starting December 1, 2024. This decision stems from the continued non-implementation of the revised minimum wage by the FCT administration. According to NLC leadership, the strike is a response to the refusal to meet the legal requirements of paying the new minimum wage, a move they see as both unjust and in defiance of the law.

Efforts by labor leaders to engage with the FCT administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike, have reportedly been unsuccessful. Union officials lament that despite multiple attempts to discuss the matter, they have been unable to secure meetings to address the concerns of workers. This lack of engagement, coupled with rising living costs and inflation, has fueled frustration among workers who argue that even the proposed minimum wage adjustments are inadequate given the current economic realities.

The strike, described as a "shutdown," will disrupt activities in the area councils, as workers seek to pressure authorities into action. The NLC maintains that the strike is not just about wages but also about respecting the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers. This industrial action underscores the broader dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of attention to labor welfare in the country.
